Lincoln Public Schools and Chromebooks

Lincoln Public Schools has decided to outfit all students with Chromebooks. This is a great undertaking, and it shows commitment to student learning. What school boards in Lincoln, all of Nebraska, and in the United States, need to consider, however, is how to properly maintain the devices. And when it's time to buy the next set, since Google has set the life of the devices at five years.

Proper maintenance is key to a good experience for students and teachers. No doubt, LPS has seen some of the problem areas, like flexible screens that lead to breakage. Tech departments have also likely added cases or covers, though that is not apparent from a 2015 photo in the Lincoln Journal Star.
If Chromebooks are breaking, then it's time to use your Craniums. These are screen protectors and whiteboards that will save on screen replacements. Even if your current models are getting older, they can be more rugged for the rest of their serviceable life, and when you order new versions, Craniums can protect them from the start.

Insurance policies cost $25 a year, and that's $125 over the useful life of a $200 Chromebook. Gummy cases cost over $50, as do many soft cases. Too much. Craniums are around $15 and do the job. That's the reason Lincoln Public Schools invested in Chromebooks to begin with: they do the job at a fraction of the price.

The added bonus of a Cranium is that it doubles as a whiteboard. Write out an answer and flip up the screen to have the teacher check the work. In some classes, like math, this is much more efficient than trying to use some kind of app. And it's still cheaper than upgrading to some kind of touchscreen version of your Chromebooks. It just makes sense.

Craniums were developed by a tech teacher in Wisconsin. This is an American invention with the ability to help save you money and teach in more ways with your Chromebooks. These fit Dells and any other Chromebooks you might be considering for students at East, Lincoln High, North Star and Southwest.
