Humidity in Winter

If your church, school, or non-profit is having trouble maintaining a winter comfort level, then it might be time to look at the humidity levels you're dealing with. Perhaps you live in a climate that does not normally get as cold as it is this year, and you have not worried about adding water vapor to the air before. Or maybe you always feel dried out at work. Humidity in winter is about comfort, and it might be time to consider whether or not your work environment is comfortable for employees. It's simple. AcuRite 00613 Indoor Humidity Monitor

Faith, Hope, and Peace Ministries Assessment

This website assessment is for Faith, Hope, and Peace site at http://fhpministries.org/. It was done by Luthernet Website Services in order to help those who run the program see what can be done to spread their message more efficiently.

Framework
Faith Hope & Peace's website is built on Wordpress. That's good because it's a CMS. While I was able to get to the admin page (some people hide this), I was not able to detect the Wordpress version. I'll assume it's been updated properly. If not, that's something that can be done easily, unless the version is as old as the theme being used.

Mobile-Friendly
The theme looks like templates I used back in 2010. It's not mobile-friendly, which means it's at least three years old. The fact that the date is on the template seems to imply it's even older. Here are the three major issues identified by Google's mobile-friendly test:
  • Viewport not set
  • Text too small to read
  • Clickable elements too close together
These points mean nobody is accessing the website with a mobile device. More than 50% of local searches are done with a device, and Google ranks sites lower when they are not mobile-friendly.

Other Issues
The website uses a contact form, which is a good idea, but then it also provides an email address, which means spam. Also, with a website as old as this one might be, make sure the contact form is working properly. The green menu makes the blue text difficult to read on my screen, too, but that could just be my screen. I am sure it's nearly impossible to read on a mobile device, however.

If your current web designer does not upgrade the Wordpress theme for free, take a look at Luthernet. We can build a new site for around $500 and host it for $100 a year. Oh, I went to the developer's website, and it looks like it might be out of business. Call Luthernet or a reputable freelance web designer.

Retiring as a Teacher Without a 403b

When I was starting out as a teacher, the district had a couple of guys younger than me selling 403b accounts. I knew I needed to do something, but I wasn't sure about those guys. Later, my wife was swayed by one of these young, good-looking financial people. She opened an account that had more fees than income, and by the time we converted it into a Rothe IRA, it was only worth what she'd put into it. With teachers unions weakening, state pension funds defaulting, and a trend towards voucher schools, you may not end up with that fat retirement you've been promised. You might wonder where you should turn, and the answer is right in front of you.

There are a lot of folks in the financial industry who make a lot of money off teachers. Educators are smart people who don't think they have time to worry about their financial planning. The answer for most teachers, however, is to learn enough about the subject and do it themselves. Think about it. Do you wait for your school district and principal to come into your classroom and offer you advice on how to educate the kids? You've seen some of their ideas, and you know better than to leave it up to them. You do it yourself. It's always been that way with teachers.

Even if you want to hire someone to do the actual investing for you, every person who wants to retire should have an idea where that money is going. With my wife's 403b, we were forced to stay invested in the programs her hot money guy wanted for us. Then he left so that another young guy could take over. Then another. And another. Once or twice a year, her account was shifted to some new college graduate who wanted to make a name for himself somewhere else. He got his fees, as did his parent company, and the investment grew at a snail's pace.

If you are looking to use your skills in order to make good decisions, just as you teach your students to do, then you need to learn more about the trends in investing. No, you don't need to take a class with a $20,000 investment school. You don't need to learn to wheel and deal in a Trump University kind of setting. You don't need to invest in your cousin's latest invention on a social funding website. You just need some advice that can help you navigate the world of your investments.

I recommend Fundamental Trends. There are other websites that can provide similar guidance, but FT is my favorite. As a writer and educator, I appreciate the content on Fundamental Trends. I like reading it, and I even understand most of it. I can make more informed decisions on my own. I can use my learning skills in order to do the research that my own financial planners never bothered to do for me. Do it for yourself.

Designing a Church Website on Our Own

Book about church website design

Not every church wants to hire a website designer. Believe me, I know. It's fine if a pastor or dedicated church member wants to develop a website for the congregation. However, what should be included in the website and why?

In my book, A Simplified Guide to Church Websites, I talk about how you can do it all yourself. A few of the tips are worth time, maybe minutes and maybe hours. A few of the tips are worth money, maybe hundreds of dollars. That's because you can save yourself the cost of hiring someone like me to fix problems that you could not figure out or that would take hours of online forum reading.

Each website framework is a little different, so this is not about one Content Management System or program. It's a best-practices guide for churches that will help you decide if you need a new website, if you can do it yourself, and even how to hire the right person to do it for you. The knowledge you gain from the book will help you decide how to proceed. If you can't figure any of it out, then hire someone. If you can figure it all out, then you'll have a pretty good church website when you're done. Either way, $5 for a book is a lot cheaper than $100 for a consultation with a local web developer. This book will help you understand why website building is complicated, but it will also show you how it can be simplified.

Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch Assessment

This website assessment is for Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch site at https://www.dakotaranch.org/. It was done by Luthernet Website Services in order to help those who run the program see what can be done to spread their message more efficiently.

Framework
This website is apparently built with an open source version of asp.net. That's a unique combination, akin to the Empire releases plans to the TIE Fighter and the Rebel forces actually building it. (That analogy took me way too long to come up with.) So, it's a CMS in a language that no other CMS builder will understand. This means the owners of the website, unless they are former asp.net developers, are probably baffled by the website.

Mobile-Friendly
According to Google, Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch's website is not fully mobile-friendly. The following are problems:
Clickable elements too close together
Content wider than screen
It may just need a new template. It may need a lot more. Since I am not familiar with asp.net or any of its knock-offs, I can't tell for sure.

Other Issues
When I take a look at the slider, I can see into the past. That's not a huge problem, however, if everything else works well. If it was mobile-friendly, no big deal. I would also try to make the menus uniform. This website has, in essence, five different menu styles at the top of the page: the Search and Donate buttons do not match, nor does the top menu, or the sub-menu, or the slider menu. I guess you could even count the lower part of the page with a Sign up button and Donate Now button that don't match any other buttons. Even the buttons inside photos don't match any of the others. And then another heart donate button. It's like someone got a hold of a Dreamweaver button-maker kit and went wild. But wait, there's more, since navigating past the home page brings me to another type of side menu.

But there's so much good about this website, buried behind these menus. Updated content, tons of pages, and lots of effort. This website deserves a makeover.

You Have Something to Sell

I began this post with an "IF" at first, but then I realized there is no if about it. You do have something to sell, and I can help.

You may simply want to sell your church, school, or child care with a better website. Public and private schools need to sell themselves to the community. Churches are often competing for members. It's all sales, to some degree. Luthernet focuses on Lutheran Church websites. Brave New Church is for websites of other churches. Passive Ninja builds all kinds, including education websites.

However, what if you also have some educational or just creative material you want to sell and market? You don't have to go at that alone, either. I have sold items on Kindle, Amazon, and TeachersPayTeachers. I have marketed these items to help the sales. These have mostly been my own, but I can certainly do the same for you.

Because I have many established accounts and websites, I can offer marketing that works. I don't try sneaky internet tricks, though. I write articles that get seen, which means you don't pay for worthless clicks and ads that end. Searches find my content, which means people will find your products. This is known as organic searching, and it's the right way to sell.

You will not get rich overnight. This is not a scheme. If you have a good product, however, you will get noticed. A good website isn't always enough, and I am one web designer who admits it.

Bethlehem CSD Joins Schools in Need of Chromebook Covers

Chromebooks are everywhere, and soon they will be in the hands of each BCSD student. These devices are everything they are claimed to be: cheap and effective. Because they're effective, all schools should have them for students. Because they're cheap, all schools should have them and some kind of covers for students.

Bethlehem has a few options, but the best is the Cranium Chromebook Protector and Whiteboard. Here's why:

Soft cases are bulky, get in the way, and are abandoned when students get a chance, like at home.

Hard plastic covers are colorful and can protect the device one time.  Maybe.

Gummy cases are thick, heavy, and expensive.

Insurance policies end up costing parents as much as the original Chromebook over the course of five years, which is coincidentally when the Chromebook is deemed obsolete by Google.

Bulk order from Educabana.

Taxpayers can be sure Sal DeAngelo, Dave Hurst, and Laurel Jones will have school district and student best-interests in mind when a decision is made about keeping BCSD Chromebooks working.

Cross Connections Assessment

This website assessment is for Cross Connections site http://www.crossconnectionscounseling.com/. It was done by Luthernet Website Services in order to help those who run the program see what can be done to spread their message more efficiently.

Framework
While it's a good idea to use a Joomla website, it's probably not a good idea to have such an old installation sitting around waiting to be hacked. In fact, I don't even remember when the login page looked like the one (that is easily accessible) at Cross Connections. The newest it could be is 1.5, and we've since upgraded to 1.6, 1.7, 2.5, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5.

Mobile-Friendly
Not so much. Here are the problems that Google sees:
  • Content wider than screen
  • Clickable elements too close together
  • Text too small to read
  • Viewport not set
That's basically every aspect that could be wrong with a mobile website.

Other Issues
I can scrape about a dozen emails right off the website, which means mass spam is sent to those who have their addresses on the site. It's a big website with a lot going on, so it deserves a new Joomla version. However, with its age, you might consider a rebuild on a new Joomla framework, since there are two big migrations to be made to get it up to current Joomla. Since it's on GoDaddy, it can be done, but I know there are lots of forum posts about how it's not always so easy. Website owners could pay $2000+ for upgrade of this scale. Luthernet would probably be about $1500 to rebuild and host it for $100 a year.

Concordia Deaconess Conference Assessment

This website assessment is for Concordia Deaconess Conference site http://concordiadeaconess.org/. It was done by Luthernet Website Services in order to help those who run the program see what can be done to spread their message more efficiently.

Framework
This website is built using Wordpress, which means it is created to have properly archived articles that can be indexed and searched.

Mobile-Friendly
This website is mobile-friendly, meaning people can access it properly on mobile devices.

Other Issues
Often, I won't look twice at a website that meets the Framework and Mobile-Friendly categories, but I felt like I had to say something about Concordia Deaconess Conference's website. I was surprised that it was mobile-friendly because it just looks old and sad. The title is http... instead of the name of the organization, the slider, frames, and menu buttons all look like something that crawled out of Microsoft Frontpage. The News Blog only has two articles, and one links to a pdf, making it less searchable. In fact, the advantages of having a Wordpress website are lost on this incarnation.  Sporadic updates and newsletters make an organization look defunct.

A Simplified Guide to Church Websites: Purpose, Planning, and Presentation

Capstone Ministries Assessment

This website assessment is for Capstone Ministries site http://capstoneministries.org/. It was done by Luthernet Website Services in order to help those who run the program see what can be done to spread their message more efficiently.

Framework
Capstone Ministries appears to be on Wordpress. Howevever, my resources say it's a Wordpress 3.5 website running the default theme, which places the last update of the framework in 2012. Knowing Wordpress, there are security issues with keeping this old site going. "Proudly Powered by Wordpress" at the bottom is a real calling card for hackers.

Mobile-Friendly
Apparently, the default Wordpress theme called Twenty Eleven was mobile-friendly. Well, kind of. It's more what we would have called "responsive." It will squeeze to be skinny, but there's no separate mobile menu.

Other Issues
Monthly newsletter rather than content for website means Google isn't finding the articles as well as it should. Email addresses rather than contact forms mean spammers are sending website owners many daily emails.

Recording Your Favorite Performance Instead of Oversearching

My wife told me she just loved a musical piece she'd heard at church during the Christmas service. She decided to contact the person who played the piano in order to find out more about the song. That person sent my wife to a link to the original artist, which led to eventually finding the sheet music, and so on. I recognize it from my days of teaching. It's oversearching. Sometimes, the easiest solution is the old-school one, maybe combined with new-school, as I finally suggested to my wife.

In this particular case, since she really wanted to have an actual recording of the specific song, that's what she should have done. Oversearching led to hours of NOT a recording of the specific song she liked. While it could have been fruitful, it wasn't, and sometimes that's what happens.

When my wife said she just wished she could have found a piano recording of that song, I kind of shook my head, since that's exactly what we heard. And the pianist was at our church, and her daughter is a student. The best solution is a live recording. Seriously, people can do that. Use a video camera and post it online or extract the audio. Or an mp3 recorder. Or a computer with a simple, free program on it. Lots of options. Post it on Youtube if it's a video, especially if you don't have to worry about copyrights. Convert your mp4 video into audio. Burn it to a CD. The point is to start with an actual live recording. Why not? Make it a habit and record all your favorites from church or school.

Our Church Website Needs Help

As a web designer, I hear this a lot from people. I even hear this from people who kind of, sort of, try to hire me. I especially hear it from those who would rather get some free advice than actually hire me. The result, however, is often the same: nothing.

While admitting the church website needs help is step one, actually doing something is a very distant second step. I have even gone out myself and told churches exactly what to do in some occasions, and completely free. And those websites still stay mired in mediocrity. After you've noticed the 2008 copyright and gone to Google's Webmaster Tools to assess whether the website is mobile-friendly, it's simply time to act. Don't form committees to decide if it's time to act while your website sits there like a paperweight.

It's a cornerstone, really. Today, your cornerstone is your web presence. Without it, the whole church will eventually collapse. Not today, but in the near future. All those churches with cool websites and small messages will continue to get those messages out, while your printed newsletter reaches fewer and fewer parishioners.

Take a look at Brave New Church Website Design. Or Luthernet. Even Passive Ninja. All are based on the idea that a church, school, child care, or small business can use a simple website that looks as good as one costing ten times as much. Done fast, these websites work. They are better than the free templates at the "free" website builders because it's all there already. You just start writing.

Your church numbers might be in decline, and a website will not be the only thing you need to stop that decline. However, NOT having a decent church website is a way of declaring you've given up. You've given up reaching your own members and reaching out to the community. And if you claim to be evangelical in any way, then you cannot give up. Take the second step. Act on a poor website design. Add something to your current website, even if it's not perfect. Get involved in ministries and write about it. Do.

Crystal Lake High School District 155: In Search of Chromebook Accessories

Taxpayers who live within Crystal Lake High School District 155 should be excited about getting new Chromebooks. These devices are a wise investment with a couple of tiny flaws: the five-year lifespan and flexible screen. As long as administrators have planned for these flaws, the residents will be happy with the purchase.

Google has said it will not support Chromebooks beyond five years. This means that a student issued a Chromebook as a 4th grader will not have the same Chromebook at high school graduation. It probably surprises some people when they hear that the lifespan is only five years, but it's actually fairly typical of computers. Standard laptops would never make it longer than five years before some needed OS update that costs nearly as much as a Chromebook. The point here is that the school district needs to be able to argue that a five-year lifespan is not short or strange. The school should have an end-of life plan, however, and it should be transparent. Is it five years and then let students keep them? Is it a buyback system that recovers parts? Recycling? Taxpayers will want to know where that $1.5 million will be in five years.

The next flaw is the inexpensive construction. Most school districts will offer some sort of protection, but most school districts get this one wrong. If the school offers insurance at $25 a year, a parent is paying $125 over the aforementioned Chromebook lifespan in order to fix it when it breaks. Looked at another way, a parent is paying $25 in year one to fix a $150 device. In year two, it's now $50 to fix a $120 device. Then it's $75 to fix a $90 device. Then $100 to fix a $60 device, and finally $125 to fix a $30 device that loses all value after that. The five-year lifespan costs the parents as much as the district in the insurance scenario, which is why many districts opt for covers.

Soft covers are big and bulky. They work to protect the Chromebooks from damage and proper use of inputs, but students love to take them out. Hard covers are usually cheap and pretty. They snap right off when you least want them to. Rubberized cases are overkill with prices to match. The Cranium by Educabana is the Award-Winning, economical solution to Chromebook covers. At under $20 retail, these protectors/whiteboards offer a unique solution that fits the budget. Breakage rates decrease without teachers policing students, since the Cranium is permanent. After five years, you'll still have an arsenal of whiteboards, meaning your Chromebooks can outlive Google's lifespan. Find out more about bulk orders from Educabana

Wapello Elementary School Could Use Chromebook Covers

Wapello Elementary School has made the decision to purchase Chromebooks for daily student use. The teachers have agreed that it's a good idea. Now is the best time to consider how well those Chromebooks will perform. Because they are inexpensive, Chromebooks have a somewhat flexible screen. Soft case covers add a lot to the price. Insurance of $25 a year seems unreasonable on cheap devices. Most hard cases aren't worth the colorful plastic they're made from.

What Wapello needs is a Cranium. Built for school use and designed by a teacher, the Cranium protects the most vulnerable part of the Chromebook. As an added bonus, Craniums double as whiteboards for those times in class when it's more appropriate to leave the computers closed and work on something that the teacher can see, like a math problem.

The math is not a problem when it comes to Craniums, since the lowered breakage rate pays for the covers in one school year.

Rockingham County - There's Still Time to Save Your Chromebooks

Rockingham County Schools in Virginia is rolling out Chromebooks to middle school students as a pilot program. Teachers will see that, yes you need filters. They will also see that some sort of protection is necessary, as students find creative ways to use and abuse digital devices.

The Cranium Chromebook Protector and Whiteboard is cutting-edge protection with an old-school side-effect. It was invented to be strong, made from PVC and aluminum. The side-effect is that the white aluminum is the best whiteboard you'll ever use. Ask a math teacher if that could come in handy.

The middle school implementation has been deemed a success by Oskar Scheikl, but the opportunity now exists to join school districts all over the country, as well as schools in Germany and Australia, but ordering Chromebook protection that will cut screen breakage costs and improve usability of the devices.

Bulk orders for Craniums can be made through Educabana.

Fort Dodge Knows What Breaks on Chromebooks - Here's How to Fix it

According to The Fort Dodge Messenger, "Screens and keyboards are the two most common pieces that would need repairing" on the Fort Dodge High School Chromebooks. Jeremy Pearson, the supervisor of information technology says that they can be repaired, and they can, but parents do not like the $25 per year to do so on a $200 device. Given the fact that these devices are said to be coming with cases, why are screens still getting broken?

The answer is that students hate the cases, assuming they are soft, cumbersome cases that we've seen. In fact, just ask the teachers, who get to carry even larger ones, if they like using them. I took mine out of the case every chance I got. If I had to take my Chromebook home to work on something as a teacher, it went in my backpack. When I left my teaching job, I had to track the case down in my basement.

The other answer we promised was how to FIX the problem, or at least part of it. The screens break because students find ways to bend them (and they are made out of cheap plastic to keep costs down) (and students take the devices out of the cases all the time, even if they say the damage happened while snug in the case). The fix for screen breakage is the Cranium Screen Protector and Whiteboard. Sure, the school district has gotten good at fixing them, but why? Replacing the screen does not make a Chromebook last longer than the Google-stated five years. It does not save money for the district, and it costs more in insurance, which apparently doesn't even cover the full repair amount.

If you are a parent of a Student at Fort Dodge High School, ask about the Cranium, even if you have a case and insurance, at under $20, it's a better investment than either.

If you work at FDHS and would like to have something more useful than a case that is also a whiteboard (great for math or test practice), then find out more about getting your hands on these. They were invented by a teacher from Wisconsin, and they really work. I have a $150 Chromebook that does everything I need and is as sturdy as anything out there. And I just pop it in my backpack when I'm off to a meeting.

Ridgefield High School May Not Want Donated Chromebooks

When I saw the headlines, I figured Ridgefield High School in Connecticut was getting one of those underhanded donations, like from soda companies that want schools sign vending machine contracts. However, the donation of $13,000 was really from the PTA and meant for technology, and it's an interesting dilemma because the board is concerned that the school should be purchasing what should be required in the classroom rather than the PTA.

With the research I have done about schools using Chromebooks, I can assert that schools get the devices in one of a few ways. One is the budget, but many use grant money, and many also use parent fees. I suppose the school could just call it a BYOD and waive the charges based on the donation. The digital cameras make sense, too, since it's tough to pay for these out of each club's budget. The computer carts, however, I always question, since Chromebooks are designed to last all day and can be stored in pretty much any old box with a plug next to it. And the eventual hope would be 1:1 with students taking them home to charge. Instead of carts, I'd recommend decent Chromebook covers .

Maybe the district should buy the Chromebooks, and the PTA could pay for the $25 yearly insurance many schools charge, or the Cranium Covers. Or both. My kids' school just got Chromebooks through a fundraiser because there was no real budget for the devices, but these are the devices students need, so if Ridgefield High School does not want the money for educational purposes, I'd love to have some to help pay for my kids' school supplies.

Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education Asks Chromebook Questions

Students in the Benton-Carroll-Salem School District may not realize it, but they are in an enviable position because the school board has waited and asked questions about Chromebooks. The answers, while obvious, were not so clear only a couple of years ago. Chromebooks and G Suite are the future for educational devices. Future, in technology terms, means the next half decade, which is the life of the Chromebook, according to Google.

Don't worry, though, since all the desktops, laptops, and too-expensive Mac devices only last that long at 2-5 times the cost. Chromebooks require less service and maintenance. Just get the Cranium by Educabana and you're good.

The Dupage High School District 88 Plans for Chromebooks

Chromebooks offer great opportunities for student, but there are many challenges along with the opportunities. Check out the article We've Got Chromebooks! Now What? written by a teacher who has used the devices and NOT been the Google representative at his school.

In fact, teachers in Dupage High School District 88 will hear a lot of cool ideas from many cool, young teachers who love to play around with devices for several hours a day after they are done teaching for the day. You do not want to learn about Chromebooks from one of these teachers. They think everything is easy and everyone wants to spend an extra twenty hours a week doing cool new stuff.

Ohio County Schools Can Have Chromebooks

Officials in Ohio County are looking into a 1:1 Chromebook initiative, but they are weighing the cost of repairs. Many school districts do not worry about this, so kudos to Ohio County for some forward thinking. In Monogalia County, for example, costs have been higher because of the purchase of cases for the Chromebooks. Ohio County can wait to see how those cases hold up, or they can continue to make the best choices by investing in the most innovative way to protect Chromebooks: the Cranium by Educabana.

Students hate cases. If the kids at Morgantown High School get big, cumbersome, annoying cases, those cases will be empty at every opportunity. Honestly, the Cranium can also fit on computers in soft cases, so Morgantown will be looking for something similar as Chromebooks mysteriously come to school broken. It's because students don't want the cases. They want small devices that get the job of a $1000 laptop done for less. And the students are right. Cases are awful. Any teacher who went out and got a gigantic soft cased for an old laptop knows this, but we still want to force the same thing on our students.

Ohio County Schools will make the right choice for the taxpayers and students in the end. If cases seem to be the thing, then so be it. If it's $25 a year insurance on a sub-$200 device, then I guess so. But if it's a cheap and simple permanent solution that can also be used as a personal whiteboard, then that seems like the most forward-thinking choice available.

Bulk orders are accepted at Educabana.

Jinks and Surfside's $476,000 Investment Should be Covered

My house is worth less than half of what Surfside and Jinks will have invested in Chromebooks. I paint the exterior, clean leaves out of the gutters, keep dirt pitched away from the foundation, check for infestations, and pay for insurance. What will Surfside and Jinks do to make sure their 1:1 Chromebook program remains a wise investment?

Insurance can work. Most schools charge $25 a year and expect a certain breakage rate. However, the parents whose kids make through four years of school and nearly pay for a new Chromebook might not agree with the economics of insurance.

Soft covers are big and bulky. Kids dislike carrying yet another backpack. These are also pricey. Hard plastic covers are colorful and probably protect the devices once before breaking themselves. That's not terrible, unless, of course, students learn how to snap the plastic off the Chromebooks before they do something careless. Would that ever happen? All the time.

Cranium Chromebook Covers/Whiteboards by Educabana are cheap and effective. Like paint on a house, it covers the main Chromebook flaw: a flexible screen. And they're whiteboards, so the teachers not in the 90% who voted to use Chromebooks a lot will have something to use in the classroom. In fact, the 90% of teachers who DO want to use Chromebooks will realize quickly that not everything is going to be done on a Chromebook, like, "There's a question on the screen. Everyone choose A,B,C, or D." Do the kids really need to use an app for that?

Even if Jinks and Surfside's Dells come with expensive soft cases, the Cranium can help protect even more, like adding some caulk to the exterior paint. Kids break stuff at home and in school. Chicago School District 73 May Overpay for Chromebook Cases

Chicago School District 73 wants to go 1:1. That's a great idea. Cases for Chromebooks, as is part of their $354 per unit pricing, is a bad idea. I've taught in school districts with cases. Students hate them, abuse them, and take Chromebooks out of them whenever the teacher is not paying attention. The cases are big and annoying as they hog desk space. Because not all classes use only Chromebooks, students need to bring their backpacks, too, so there's one computer or backpack left behind in each class. Since the cases do not fit well in the backpacks to take them home, students either cram them in or have to carry two cases home. Added to all this, cases make monitoring what students are doing on their Chromebooks more difficult because the sides hide the screen more from teachers. Plus, the case always gets in the way of basic keyboard functions.

Once these cases are purchased, it's too late to go back, so staff will try to make it work. When a friend of mine was developing a better solution, I asked my middle school students what they thought of the cases, and not one of them liked them. Not one. I have a $150 Chromebook that does just fine for what most students need. I added an under $20 Cranium Chromebook Cover and Whiteboard by Educabana to protect it. I throw it in my backpack and go. The whole unit is the size and weight of a small textbook. The Chromebook is actually fairly sturdy, excepting the flexible screen. With the Cranium, I don't worry about the screen. I'd recommend that the folks in charge in District 73 take a look at what will serve students and taxpayers best.

Jaffrey-Rindge School District 1:1 Chromebooks

The Jaffrey-Rindge School District just cut a sweet deal for new Chromebooks, getting them at $7000 less than was budgeted. Now it's time to look at a 1:1 plan. Before the school district takes that final step, however, it's also time to consider how much it will take to keep the Chromebooks safe, especially once students start taking them home.

The options are:
1. Do nothing and hope for the best.
2. Soft, cumbersome cases that students detest. Chromebooks are usually freed from the enclosures once per day, and always at home.
3. Pretty, colorful plastic snap-on hard cases. These might work once as they break.
4. The Cranium Chromebook Protector and Whiteboard by Educabana. That's right, it does both. It's strong, and it keeps the Chromebook's flexible screen from breaking, which is really the Chromebook's main weakness.
5. Charge parents the standard $25 a year in insurance. This accepts the normal breakage rate and pools the money to fix devices while students have nothing to use. Most schools then purchase loaner Chromebooks to cover the time in the shop. Expect some parental grumbling, too.

New London High School Parents - Read This About Chromebooks

Now that New London High School is 1:1, students will be bringing the devices home. Parents can pay $25 a year for insurance. The computers cost $175 each, which means that after four years, the Chromebooks would be over half paid for in insurance. Add to this that Google has said its Chromebook End of Life policy is for five years.

Put another way, New London parents can pay $100 for four years and then pay another $25 to keep the device, which will be obsolete in about a year, so that's $125 total. Remember, the district ALREADY paid the $175, which is a good deal, but your contribution makes it $300. Still a good deal compared to a $1000 laptop, but can you spend a little less?

Another option is to skip the insurance and hope for the best. Worst case, you buy a Chromebook two years in that will last another five years.

Last option, get a Cranium Chromebook Cover. While it's not complete insurance, this protector stops screen flex, one of the leading causes of breakage. And it's a whiteboard. And it's not bulky like the soft cases. This permanent protection will last the lifetime of your Chromebook, and it costs less than one year of insurance.

Amigos En Cristo Assessment

This website assessment is for Amigos en Cristo's site amigoscenter.org. It was done by Luthernet Website Services in order to help those who run the program see what can be done to spread their message more efficiently.

Framework
The Amigos en Cristo website is a Content Management System. This helps it archive content and get search engines to see that content. It looks like Wordpress, just not sure if it's updated.

Mobile-friendly
The website is not mobile-friendly. However, the site blocks Google from assessing how it works. Here's a link to the mobile-friendly test: https://search.google.com/search-console/mobile-friendly?id=G77IXNtvyVaC0_BHQxfw5g , which says the website's Viewport not set, Text too small to read, and Clickable elements too close together

Other issues
Mainly, this is just an old-looking website with a 2012 copyright telling everyone its age that probably needs a new theme is Wordpress. The theme should be mobile-friendly and won't change the basic functionality. If you own this website and have been paying for web maintenance for years, I would demand a basic, mobile-friendly template. If you are now hosting it yourself and unsure how to proceed, Luthernet can help out, too, so go ahead and contact Brian.

Ambassadors of Reconciliation Assessment

The Ambassadors of Reconciliation website at http://www.hisaor.org/ needs some work. This website assessment was done by Luthernet, which designed Lutheran Radio Church Service and Outcome-based YM.  Let's take a look at what we found.

Framework
The website is built with Adobe Golive, which precedes Dreamweaver, and places its core at around 2008 at the latest. With a decade in between then and now, you can be sure the website has been left behind.

Mobile-Friendly
According to Google, the Ambassadors of Reconciliation website is NOT mobile-friendly, which negatively impacts searches and makes it difficult to use for those with handheld devices. Here are the three issues found:
  • Clickable elements too close together
  • Viewport not set
  • Text too small to read

Other Issues
  • The articles are PDFs, not part of the website as searchable content. This means that searches do not see the articles in the same way, if at all.
  • The SSL certificate at the bottom of the page dates the website to when this was something people wanted to know on websites.
  • Email addresses are published, making Spam an issue.
  • The training calendar is updated, but it links to another website. There should be articles describing the training on the main site, and then link out to another site in order to take applications. Or do both, but the other website is likely getting more of the traffic.
  • The bookstore is done in asp.net. This may complicate rebuilding the main website on another server.

If you own this website, we recommend you contact Luthernet today.

Vincitore del 2016 Tech and Learning Award of Excellence.

Chromebook Covers Covered

If you want to protect your Chromebook with a cover, then what's the best choice? We'll discuss a few possibilities and give you our opinion.
1. Faith
You can cover your Chromebook in faith or love or trust or any other idea, but ideas don't fix broken Chromebooks or protect them like a force field. Therefore, faith is not a good covering for Chromebooks. It's fine to love your children, but trusting them not go break things is generally a poor choice.
2. Soft case covers
Soft covers work fairly well, but ask students whether a soft cover is cumbersome or not. It is, and students dislike them, whether they are thick sleeves or fat briefcases. Gummy soft covers might work a little better than giant bulky ones, but then you have a giant, thick Chromebook, which is not why you ordered the devices in the first place.
3. Hard covers
Most Chromebook covers are made of pretty plastic, and it's great for students to express themselves through color. However, cheap plastic covers are designed to work once (if you're lucky). These covers can also be removed easily by students, and anything that can be done easily by children AND result in destruction is certain to occur. Often. Many hard covers fit too loose, while others nearly crack each time they are stretched over the device.
4. Cranium covers
These covers are permanent, solid, and light. They double as whiteboards. They cost about the same as the plastic covers and less than soft cases. If you have one choice of covers for your Chromebook, use your cranium and get a Cranium by Educabana.
